Sarasota Memorial Health Care System welcomes new Cardiovascular Surgeon to First Physicians Group

Cardiovascular Surgeon Jonathan Hoffberger, DO, FACOS, has joined Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s First Physicians Group (FPG).

Dr. Hoffberger, a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon with 20 years experience, joined the cardiovascular-thoracic surgery practice of Jeffrey Sell, MD, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery for Sarasota Memorial, and Cardiothoracic Surgeons Paul Vesco, MD, and Thomas Kelly, MD, at their Sarasota office (Heart and Vascular Services, 1540 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 303). Dr. Hoffberger began accepting new patients this month. Appointments may be scheduled by calling (941) 917-8791.

Before joining Sarasota Memorial’s FPG practice, Dr. Hoffberger practiced Cardiothoracic Surgery in Southeastern Michigan for seven years and in 2010 returned to South Florida to establish a cardiac surgical program in Northern Broward County. He has performed more than 2,500 cardiac and thoracic procedures, including coronary revascularization, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, mitral valve repair, complex multi-valve operations, high-risk operations, thoracic vascular reconstructions and cancer surgery.

His specialties and practice focus include:
– Surgery of the Aortic Valve and Ascending/Arch of the Aorta
– Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest
– Mitral Valve Repair and Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery
– RF Maze Ablation
– Complex/High Risk Cardiac Surgery.

Dr. Hoffberger is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and is board certified in Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgery and General Surgery. He also holds advanced certifications in trauma care and has trained medical students and residents for nearly 20 years. Dr. Hoffberger continues to serve his profession as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Nova Southeastern Medical School and Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery for Columbia University Medical Center, which affiliated with Sarasota Memorial’s cardiovascular-thoracic team in 2012. He also is the Chair-Elect of the Division of Cardiothoracic/Vascular Surgery of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

Born in North Miami Beach, he graduated from Tulane University College of Biomedical Engineering in 1992. Dr. Hoffberger completed medical school at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996 and went on to train in General Surgery at Michigan State University – Botsford General Hospital. In 2003, Dr. Hoffberger completed his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery (heart surgery and lung surgery) at the prestigious Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago.
