Sarasota Memorial Health Care System welcomed two of Sarasota’s longstanding neurologists into its First Physician Group (FPG) network last week.
Board-certified neurologists Dean P. Sutherland, MD, Ph.D, and Gregory P. Hanes, MD, officially joined the health system’s network of primary and specialty physicians on Friday under the new practice name “First Physicians Group Neurology.”
Drs. Sutherland and Hanes have been in private practice in Sarasota for 15 years and 13 years, respectively, treating a wide range of neurologic injuries and disease, from headaches, dementia and stroke, to Parkinson’s, dystonia, ALS and other nerve and muscle disorders. Jennifer Tulman, PA-C, a board-certified physician assistant who has worked with the doctors since 2008, also will be joining the FPG practice.
Both physicians serve as clinical assistant professors of Neurology with Florida State University College of Medicine, teaching third- and fourth-year medical students who are training at Sarasota Memorial and other clinical locations in Sarasota, and have held multiple leadership positions at Sarasota Memorial over the years. In addition to seeing patients in their practice and providing emergency consults for patients in SMH’s Emergency Care Centers, Dr. Sutherland directs a specialty clinic for Parkinson’s patients, while Dr. Hanes directs SMH’s Center for Neuromuscular Disorders, a multi-disciplinary clinic in partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for patients affected by MD and ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
The addition of the neurologists to the hospital-owned physician network reflects a regional effort to address a shortage of specialty physicians in Florida and increasing focus on population health, a nationwide initiative that encourages collaboration and partnerships among providers to better prevent disease and promote the health of patients.
With the exception of a new practice name and phone number, there will be virtually no detectible changes for the physicians’ existing patients. The doctors will continue to be based in their Waldemere Medical Plaza office, 1921 Waldemere Street, Ste. 701, Sarasota, FL 34239. The new phone number is 941-917-8900.
